How to use a YubiKey to secure your STEX Account

A YubiKey is an open standard for reinforcing two-factor authentication (2FA). It involves the use of a physical key to strengthen 2FA, safeguarding your online accounts from cyber-attacks.

In this article, we will explain how to use a YubiKey to lock down your STEX account, email, and even other valuable online accounts.

What exactly is a YubiKey?

YubiKey by Yubico, a Silicon Valley-based company, is a Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) device that strives to reinforce and simplify the 2FA process. It applies FIDO2, WebAuthn, and FIDO U2F open authentication standards, as well as USB-C, and NFC technologies.

A physical device is considered to be a more secure 2FA method. Yubico solutions are deployed by some of the giant tech firms, like Google, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, and governments of the United Kingdom and Turkey.

KrebsonSecurity reported that there was no confirmed employer account takeover since implementing the security keys at Google.

How to use a YubiKey in your STEX Account

If you plan to lock down your STEX account with the help of a YubiKey or similar U2F device, the first place to start is your email account.

After that, you can proceed to secure your STEX account.

First, you must sign in to your account.

Under your username, click on the profile section.

In the MENU section, select the Accounts Settings.

Click the Activate button of the section labeled Web Authentication with Security Key.

Enter your YubiKey in the Label section and tab START DEVICE REGISTRATION to register your YubiKey. That is it!

Every time you log into your STEX account, you will be prompted to insert the encrypted hardware key into your computer. Therefore, even if someone manages to access your password, they cannot do anything with it.

However, you also need to lock your email account since it is related to your STEX account. If you use Google, the Advanced Protection portal contains a stepwise guide on how to use a YubiKey. Other email providers, like Protonmail, also support the U2F protocol.

At STEX, we prioritize the security of our users! That is why we urge all our esteemed customers to strengthen the safety of their accounts by adding a YubiKey.
